Strength, height, spacing, cleaning and style – a practical guide to choosing chairs for a restaurant, café or hotel.
Chairs in a venue are used all day, every day. They need to last, be comfortable and suit the interior. Here are the seven things we advise our clients to check before ordering.
1. Strength and construction
For a venue, choose a solid wood chair with strong joints and cross rails between the legs. They take the load when guests lean back or move the chair. Well-dried timber does not shrink, so the joints stay tight for years.
2. The right height
A standard table is about 75 cm high and a comfortable seat about 45–47 cm. A gap of around 28–30 cm between seat and table top is what makes sitting comfortable. For a bar counter of about 105–110 cm, look for bar stools with a seat height of about 75–77 cm.
3. Space between tables
Allow about 60 cm of table width per person and leave room behind for the chair to move and for staff to pass. Slimmer, lighter models fit more seats without the room feeling crowded.
4. Weight and stacking
Light chairs are easier to move when cleaning and rearranging. If the room is also used for events, consider a stackable model such as Comfort, which takes little space in storage.
5. Finish and upholstery
A lacquered surface is the easiest to clean and suits busy venues. An upholstered seat adds comfort – choose fabric or leather that is easy to clean and resists wear.
6. With or without armrests
Armchairs are more comfortable for long evenings but take more space. Choose models with low armrests that slide under the table and combine them with standard chairs.
7. Style and a consistent look
Chairs shape the atmosphere. Viennese chairs create a classic café feel, while designer chairs bring a modern Scandinavian look. It helps when one model comes in several versions – chair, armchair and bar stool.
