Simple tips on cleaning, humidity, upholstery and maintenance that keep solid wood chairs beautiful and stable for years.
A solid wood chair can last for decades. All it takes is a few simple habits – at home or in a venue.
Cleaning
Wipe with a soft, slightly damp cloth and dry straight away. Avoid abrasive sponges, cleaners with ammonia or bleach, and silicone sprays – they can damage the finish. Wipe up spills immediately, before they soak in.
Humidity and temperature
Wood is a living material – it takes in and releases moisture. Keep chairs away from radiators, air conditioners and direct sunlight. Moderate humidity without sudden changes is best. That way the joints stay tight and the wood does not crack.
Protecting floors and legs
Stick felt pads under the legs. They protect the floor, reduce noise and stop the legs from wearing. Replace them when they wear out.
Upholstery
Vacuum upholstery regularly with a soft brush. Treat stains straight away with a cleaner suited to the material, testing it first on a hidden spot. Care for leather with a leather balm once or twice a year.
Lacquer or oil
Lacquered chairs need the least care – regular cleaning is enough. Oiled finishes look more natural and are easy to refresh: when needed, apply a thin coat of furniture oil and wipe off the excess.
Checking the joints
In venues where chairs are moved constantly, check them every few months. If a chair starts to wobble, do not leave it – a timely repair extends its life.
